Revelation Perth International Film Festival - July 10-20, 2008

SEASONAL GREETINGS FROM THE PROGRAMME DIRECTOR...

In 1979 the filmmaker Werner Herzog cooked and ate his shoe, a singular act of affirmation for those filmmakers who pursue their personal vision whatever the odds. Herzog's public display was documented by Les Blank, and is widely available on video. Werner Herzog Eats His Shoe is a film that remains close to my heart, a pure celebration of the radical and creative spirit. Herzog's belief in the necessity for independent visionaries is crucial when programming Revelation 2008.

In this cold multiplex world, in which so many films are sold as simple product, I have always sought to discover those movies and auteurs whose work exists beyond the acceptable mainstream canon. To me any curatorial opportunity necessitates a form of cultural archeology, searching through the detritus, the rubble, and the neglected areas in order to find new aesthetic strategies and different forms of cinema. I am searching for and unearthing those unique and inspiring films that simply demand to be seen. Cinema that celebrates the experience of sitting in a darkened room and immersing oneself within the processes of film. Cinema that will inspire audiences. Now more than ever we need unique individual voices in cinema, it is my hope that Revelation 2008 provides a platform for these movies. Jack Sargeant
